Is hating a cold plunge a controversial take? I feel like everyone lovvvvveeesssssssss their cold plunge, but I ... do not. It’s not even the cold plunge itself - it’s the hours of shivering afterwards that really hurt me in my soul.
I am a warm girl. Cozy girl. Infrared sauna girl. (Hot) tubby time girl.
I am however very good at the cold plunge. I meditate a lot and I can crush six minutes in that freezing cold water no problem. Just quiet the noise and focus on my mantra for the full six. Yes, it’s tingly and painful but then oddly warm, but it really isn’t so bad if you control your breathing and your mind.
My first cold plunge ever (I’ve only done two) was my early dating attempt effort to show off for my (now) fiancé. We went to Remedy Place, my fave spot for all things “wellness” from the dreaded cold plunge to delightful Hyperbaric Oxygen chambers and ofc he challenged me to stay in as long as I could. Little did he know in the early days of dating what an absolute killer I am, and that I never back down from or lose a challenge HAHAHAHAH. Gotcha, Dom! I think he liked me more after our cold plunge.
Anyway, after succeeding the first time with flying colors, the Love Wellness team and I decided to head back to the new Remedy Place location in Soho for an episode of Wild Wild Wellness and another go at the cold plunge to see if I could match my first time performance or if it that one-off was simply a fluke to show Dom that GIRLS ARE TOUGH.
Cold plunging, or immersion in cold water, offers numerous potential benefits for both body and mind. It improves circulation, reduces inflammation, speeds muscle recovery, and supports the immune system. Mentally, it may boost mood, focus, and resilience by releasing endorphins and activating the vagus nerve, which calms anxiety. Cold exposure also enhances metabolism, promotes better sleep, and strengthens willpower through intentional discomfort. Plus, it can improve skin tone and hair health by tightening pores and sealing cuticles.
And as it turns out, I am just really good at cold plunges because I banged out another six minutes no problem. I dragged my CEO along with me for this WWW episode because she is also a brave lady, and she also did great. Women are so strong, aren’t we?
But lets cut to the SHAKES, because it’s the involuntary shaking after the cold plunge that I find to be so terrible. I am aware that cold plunge afficianados say the shaking is the good part, and so important, but I’m sorry, I hate it.
I made sure to have the infrared sauna booked and available for right after the cold plunge to warm up, because I couldn’t let the potential shakes ruin the rest of my day (we did the cold plunge at 7am before the workday). It was also 6 degrees F outside that morning, so I couldn’t take any chances.
Am I a cold plunge heroine but cold shakes sissy? Yes. Do I actually care? No.
On the wild scale, it’s a 6/10.
